Food for Thought During the Holiday Season…

We love this time of year-don’t you? The holiday season gains momentum in a flurry of parties and festivities as each day brings us closer to the New Year. However, there is a downside…

We have officially entered the ‘Season of Excuses.’

That’s right, even the most dedicated fitness enthusiast will skip workouts and eat too much junk this month. Because it’s Christmas, after all…

Be aware that excuses quickly turn into a slippery slope. You miss one workout this week and then two next week, before you know it you haven’t exercised for a month. Once you fall out of your routine it will take focused effort to get back on track.

Here are the more popular excuses…maybe they sound familiar:

I Don’t Have Time: Holiday parties, shopping trips, and house guests all seem like valid excuses as to why you can’t exercise today, but don’t believe it. The fact is that you can find the time to exercise, even in the busiest season of the year. Simply sit down and schedule exercise time into your calendar.

I Don’t Have Anyone to Exercise With: Your spouse or friend committed to exercise with you three times a week, only to quit a week later. Now you are left to workout on your own…or to quit right along with them. Let’s be honest, the easy thing to do is to quit rather than face the gym alone, but where does that leave you? Right back where you started-out of shape and unhappy with your body. Don’t let someone else’s laziness get in the way of your success.

Another Day Won’t Make a Difference: By skipping your workout today you may not wake up one size larger tomorrow, but you also won’t wake up in better shape. The fact is that your current body and health are the direct result of all the little choices that you make each day. Resolve to make each choice a healthy one, and watch how your body and health are transformed.

I’ll Never Reach My Goals Anyway: It’s been years since you’ve been in shape and the number on the scale is so large that you don’t even know how long it would take to lose it all. It’s easy to give up when the task at hand is overwhelming. However, we are here to tell you that you can do it. What you are facing is simply a fear of failure. What if you start exercising only to gain it all back? What if you don’t have what it takes to lose the weight? Remember this: You only fail when you allow excuses to stop your progress.

Examine the why: An important step in conquering your excuses is to determine their source. Are the holidays to blame or is there a deeper issue at hand? Excuses are often an indication of lowered motivation. Have you forgotten your reasons for getting fit? Another common reason is boredom. Have your workouts gotten stale?

Conquer each excuse: Don’t let excuses derail your goals any longer. Use these three tips and get the results that you deserve:

Focus on the benefits. We all need a reminder every now and then as to why we started exercising in the first place. Make a list of the benefits you enjoy most and read them before your workout.

Keep it interesting. Do you do the same thing over and over? No wonder you’ve started to come up with excuses. Throw your old routine out the window and try something totally new. Always keep your routine fresh-it will give you something to look forward to.

Treat yourself to Personal Training. Sometimes a little help goes a long way. All of our personal training programs are designed with one goal in mind: to get you in the best shape of your life as quickly as possible.

Don’t wait another day-contact me today to get started on the right fitness program for you. Together we will get you the results that you deserve.

The season of deck-your-waist-with-extra-pounds is officially here. So what are you going to do about it? Will you join the masses who faithfully gain 5 pounds between November and January? Or will you do something different this year?

It is entirely possible to avoid the dreaded holiday chub by following this simple strategy:

All About Power To begin, it’s important that you approach your goal from a place of I can rather than I can’t. Most diet and weight loss plans begin by outlining everything that youcan’t eat. You can’t enjoy the buffet at your office holiday party. You can’t taste the fudge that your aunt Frances made. You can’t partake in the seasonal coffee drinks. You can’t, you can’t, you can’t.

It shouldn’t be surprising when the diet only last a few days before your inner rebel breaks out and defies all the rules by mowing through an entire plate of Christmas cookies in one sitting. When you begin from a place of can’t, you forfeit all of the power. On the other hand, when you approach your goal from a place of I can, the power swings back into your favor. Use these 3 steps to re-gain your power:

Focus on positive action. Rather than obsess over what you can’t eat this holiday season, I want you to take the positive action of exercising into your own hands. Every time that you complete a workout feel the surge of empowerment that comes with the accomplishment.

Schedule positive action. The next step is to concretely schedule your workout sessions. I advise that you exercise even more during the holiday season than normal, since you will be taking in more calories. If you normally exercise 3 times each week for 30 minutes, then plan to exercise 5 times each week for 45 minutes.

Reward yourself for positive action. At the end of each week take the time to reward yourself for successfully completing each scheduled workout. Don’t use food as a reward, since you’ll be taking in extra calories as it is. A massage, a new outfit, a leisurely hour spent at a coffee shop, or even a well deserved nap are all great ways to reward yourself.

What You Believe The people who won’t gain any weight this holiday season already know it. How? They’ve decided not to gain weight, and they believe it. Do you believe that you won’t gain weight this year? Or are your past failures keeping you less than confident?

Let’s create a strong belief that you won’t be powerless to holiday pounds.
In his book, Awaken the Giant Within, Anthony Robbins explains 4 steps needed to create a belief:

Step One: Identify the basic belief. I won’t gain weight this holiday season.

Step Two: Reinforce your belief by adding new and more powerful references. This means focusing on the reasons that you don’t want to gain the weight. Get out a sheet of paper and list all of the cons to you gaining an extra 5 or 10 pounds over the holidays. Spend a lot of time on this step. Reiterate to yourself over and over why you don’t want to gain the weight.

Step Three: Find a triggering event, or create one of your own. Disturb yourself. Try on your bathing suit, or better yet go out and try on bathing suits in dressing rooms with that awful lighting. Try on your skinny jeans. Try on last year’s cocktail dress. Try on that outfit at the back of your closet that you still can’t fit into.

Step Four: Take action. Get started on your exercise program – right now. Taking action is the most important step, and the most rewarding

Email me right now, I’ll help you get started on an exercise program and guide you step-by-step all the way to success. Who knows? I may even get you to your New Year’s Resolution before January even starts.

Give yourself the power to overcome holiday pounds – get started now.

Hi Everyone!

It’s been awhile since my last blog, but I just wanted to thank all of you for tuning in.

So much has happened this year…

After competing at the Arnold Classic/Figure International as a Pro Figure competitor, I decided to crossover to the new IFBB Pro Bikini division. To make a long story short, I was fortunate enough earn my Olympia qualification as a Pro Bikini competitor at the New York Pro. That makes it 2-for-2!… Two years in a row competing in the Olympia–Last year, as my first year as an IFBB Pro, competing in the Pro Figure division and then this year as an IFBB Bikini Pro! … I am truly blessed. What was truly special about this year is that it was the very 1st Bikini Olympia in the history of the fitness industry and I was honored to be a part of it and in the elite line up of beautiful and talented women! What an amazing experience!

Check out my stage shots from the inaugural Bikini Olympia 2010 (Just click on the blue text)

There’s so much to tell about my journey as an IFBB Bikini Pro this year (and I will share it with you in my future blogs), but I wanted to dedicate this blog to my Uncle John and great Auntie Loling. As I was preparing for the Bikini Olympia with only a couple weeks before showtime, my Uncle John became very sick. I drove down to San Diego to visit him in the hospital and see the rest of my family. At the time, it looked like everything was going to be ok. He looked good. He was talking and understanding all the conversations that were going on and he even had his sense of humor and being somewhat of wise guy making funny comments. But earlier the following week, he went into cardiac arrest and by the week’s end he had passed away… Just 5 days before I was to leave to Vegas for the Olympia. I was unable to say my final goodbye to him as his funeral was held during the Olympia Weekend. Plans had changed and none of my immediate family was going to be able to make it to Vegas to watch me compete at the very 1st Bikini Olympia.

To make matters even worse, the same week he passed, I found out that my great Auntie Loling’s cancer came back and she was terminal. Needless to say, it was a very tough week and my mindset to compete at this history making Olympia was not there until days before stepping on stage when I was to finally arrive in Vegas. I pushed through and did my best to stay focused. I kept my family close to my heart and in my thoughts. I imagined the energy they would be sending me if they were seated out in the audience supporting me.

I guess the reason why I’m sharing this with all of you is because with death and illness surrounding my life at this moment, I want all of you to appreciate the family, friends and loved ones you have. Take the time to tell them how much they mean to you because “tomorrow is not promised to anyone.” That saying has never hit me so hard until now and it’s really made me look at myself, my life, and my goals and really put things in perspective.

I’ve always believed in the saying, “Every moment that passes is a yet another moment to turn things around.” All of you out there have that power to make things different for yourself with each passing moment. If you’re not happy with your body or your health… If you’ve always wanted to do something or have a goal but was too afraid to make the first steps in that direction… if there’s a relationship that needs some changing or some repairing with a family member, friend, or partner… NOW IS THE TIME to start taking those baby steps in the right direction to make it happen. Always be true to yourself! … OK! I know I sound like an over zealous life coach spouting every motivational quote I could thing of, but I know you all get the point. Just take the time and do what’s important to you.

Well, until next time, I appreciate you all for taking the time to read my blog and letting me share with you this very personal subject that has impacted my life. It’s good to be healthy in body, mind and soul. I wish that for all of you. Talk again soon…

With the utmost respect and sincerity,

Sherlyn

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to say hello to all of you and give you the newest update in my life as a Pro in the IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding), the most well-known organization in the fitness industry! For the past season, I made my Pro debut as a Figure competitor at the 2009 Arnold Classic/Figure International! I had an amazing season of placing in the Top 5 in several shows, as well as qualifying and ultimately competing at the big stage, the Figure Olympia!!! Along with being on the cover of Oxygen Magazine and being featured in Reps!, Ironman Magazine, and Planet Muscle! It was such an incredible year my first year as a Pro and I am so blessed!

Although, I have decided to transfer divisions and become a Pro Bikini competitor and this weekend will be my Pro debut as a Pro Bikini competitor at the Musclecontest Pro Bikini Championships! This is going to be a huge and historical show being that the Bikini division is a very new addition to the organization and this competition will be the very FIRST IFBB Pro Bikini Championships. I’m looking forward to this new adventure in this very fresh and new division and I take on and embrace this new journey as an IFBB Pro Bikini competitor. I have an amazing opportunity to be involved in the history of making this organization and this sport so I’m looking forward to a very exciting season! My goal and hope is to represent everyone I motivate and inspire at the first Bikini Olympia later on this year.

Wish me luck! I will do my best to keep you all updated with the results, my competition journey and when possible, show pics and video of my whole journey to the top!

So send me winning vibes this Saturday, March 27th as I take the stage at 11am for Prejudging at the Musclecontest Pro Bikini Championships being held at the Veteran’s Auditorium in Culver City, California! It’s going to be fun and it’s time to rock the stage!!!

With all my Motivation and Support,

Sherlyn

So I just finished my training session with my amazing & world-famous trainer, Charles Glass. I am blessed on a daily basis that I’m so fortunate to have the best team behind me to prepare for my next Pro competition.

Being an IFBB Figure Pro is a true honor & brings competing in Figure to a whole new level! My team gives me the tools & guidance to achieve greatness in my health and fitness goals, but it is up to me to execute, stay on track, and be consistent with their work with me.

I truly believe that the person who has the most heart, dedication & consistency with the correct fitness equation is going to become the true champion!! Regardless if you are a top fitness Pro or the average person just starting to work out, if you follow this formula YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR HEALTH & FITNESS GOALS!!! If you follow this equation, you will maximize your results in the least amount of time possible!!!

“What’s the big secret fitness equation to every individuals health & fitness goals?” you ask. I’ll let you in on my secret!

My FIRST Blog for IF…. Well, I guess I should start by introducing myself… Hi Everyone! I’m Sherlyn Roy, the new female spokesperson for InstructionalFitness.com I’m very honored to be given this position and my hope of what I can bring to you all is my experience, expertise, inspiration and motivation to give you the strength and courage for you all to reach your health and fitness goals to levels you’ve only dreamed of. Everyone deserves to have the body they’ve always dreamed of, and I’m not gonna lie, it’s gonna take hard work, dedication and a commitment on your part, but here’s the thing… It’s a commitment to yourself and how much you want the best for yourself. We could take the easy way out and be mediocre but I truly believe that each and everyone of you were not put on this earth to live a mediocre/mundane life.. Like the great motivational speaker, Tony Robbins, says that greatness starts with you and your health and fitness.
