Goals & Obstacles

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

We all know what we want to look like if given a choice.  For the most part, many people even have ideas as how to accomplish this goal.  Some people believe all they have to do is eat a certain way.  Other people believe they just have to spend as much time as possible in the gym, and some believe that they can take supplements to get to their ideal look.

The fact of the matter is that nutrition actually makes up the largest part of achieving your ideal look.  You can work out constantly and take all the supplements in the world, but if you don’t watch your nutrition, there’s a 99% chance that you won’t reach your goal.

In 1992, the Bill Clinton campaign came up with a phrase to explain why Bill Clinton was a better choice than the first George Bush.  The phrase was, “It’s the economy stupid.”  Well, in the fitness world, if you substitute the word “economy” with “nutrition”, you have an explanation to the biggest obstacle in reaching your goals.

This is not to say that working out is not extremely important.  This also isn’t to say that there isn’t value in supplements.  But supplements enhance your progress; they don’t do the job for you.  Creatine, ZMA, and Amino Acids are all great supplements for people trying to build muscle, but finding the right ratio of protein and carbohydrates is absolutely essential.

On the other side, fat burners, fat blockers, and CLA are all great for those trying to lose fat, but eating the right amount of protein, the right kind of carbohydrates, and cutting down the sugars will help you get to your goal so much faster.

At the end of the day, you need to be honest with yourself and do what you need to do.  Cheating on your diet and exercise only cheats yourself.  If you don’t know what you should do, hire a personal trainer that can work with you and tailor a program to your needs.  After all, you only get one life and one body, so make the best of it!

Back To Reality…

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Well, I’ve been back from my Honeymoon for about two weeks now and I’ve had to get back in touch with reality.  The nice thing about the all-inclusive Sandals Resorts is that you don’t have to think about a thing.  I was able to eat all day long whenever I wanted as much as I wanted.  One of my biggest problems here is that I don’t eat nearly enough times throughout the day.  The main reason being of course I’m lazy to make all the meals I need to.  But my goal is to get up to 235 pounds, so I know I’m going to have to learn to kick it up a notch and get my meals in.

Realistically, I’m going to have to cook a lot of portions at one time and divide them up.  For years, I’ve watched my cousin Patrick (a personal trainer in Houston) cook all his meals for the week at one time.  I didn’t quite understand at the time because I would rather eat fresh food than food that is reheated.  But I understand now.  People like Patrick, Joe Tong, Mike O’Hearn and Sherlyn Roy cook all these meals at one time because time is of the essence.  If you have to eat at least 6 times a day, cooking 6 meals a day is too time consuming.  Even cooking 4 meals.  So they cook it all at one time and eat them quickly throughout the day.

So before the honeymoon, I was all about leaning out.  Now I want to get bigger, but not a great deal fatter.  So I’ll choose my meals carefully, train heavily, and get back on Creatine.  I’m hoping to build up mass through January and then lean out for next summer.  So let’s see how it goes!

Honeymoon Shape

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to my second blog.  This is a very interesting time in my life.  In addition to having recently launched the website, I’ve also been in the process of planning my wedding.

Now the wedding isn’t really something I feel like I need to be in shape for.  After all, I’m going to be covered by a Tux the entire time.  But what follows the day after is my honeymoon.  For this, I feel the need to get in shape.

I workout consistently.  In fact, I enjoy my time at the gym.  It’s my time to push myself physically and think about everything going on in my life and get perspective on things.  So in the gym department, I’m good.  What I’m not good at though is my diet and nutrition.  I love to eat things that aren’t the best for getting in shape.  What’s worse, I actually dislike the foods that are good for me and that would keep me in shape such as fish and vegetables.  But now that the honeymoon is coming up, I know that I have to get disciplined and get in shape.

So here’s my plan…Continue to lift weights as I normally do.  Get off my Creatine and replace it with a fat burner.  I traditionally use Cell Drive during my workout, but will now try the fat burner Meltdown by VPX.  I’ve tried it a few times and it’s how much you sweat during your workouts.  And most importantly, I’m going to clean up my diet by eating a lot less red meat and a lot more chicken.  I might even try to adapt a taste for fish.  I will also cut down on my fats and limit my carbs to complex carbs.  And of course, I want to pretty much eliminate sugar from my diet.  This means no more Cherry Cokes!

With any luck, this will help reduce my body fat enough to get me on my honeymoon with pride.  At any rate, I’ll keep you posted on how things go.
