Calories: 4 Calories Per Gram

Function:The main function of carbohydrates is to provide your body with energy.  Carbohydrates come in two forms, simple and complex.

Simple Carbohydrates are your simple sugars that you find in candy, soda, or in a bowl of white sugar.  You can also find simple sugars in fruit and milk.  It is better to consume sugars from fruits or milk because they contain other benefits such as vitamins, fiber, and calcium.  Candy and sodas however, are just empty calories as they offer no other nutritional benefit.

Complex Carbohydrates, also known as starches, are found in grain products such as bread, pasta, and rice.  These carbohydrates are known as complex because the body must actually break them down into simple sugar.  Because this process takes longer, a person's appetite is more likely to be satisfied for a longer period of time.

Simple Carbohydrates  Table sugar, cakes, jam, chocolate, fudge, candy, gum, soft drinks, honey, some puddings.

Complex Carbohydrates  Pasta, brown rice, potatoes, other root vegetables, brown bread, pita bread, wholegrain cereals, corn, peas, beans, lentils.
